Esther and Tocchio

Esther and Galone

Esther Mortimer began riding at age five under guidance of her father Ralph. At the time Ralph Mortimer was an instructor at the Eglington Equestrian Center in Ontario, Canada. Esther's obvious talent continued to develop and by the age of 9 she was riding PSG dressage tests.

She placed first in this advanced level against a field of much older competitors. At age 11 her family moved to Guatemala where her father accepted a position as coach to the Guatemalan Olympic team. Esther was in a new country, with new friends and horses to ride. Her talent again progressed as she rode top level horses but unfortunately she had a major setback. The horse she was riding flipped over, breaking Esther's pelvis in 8 places. She was told she would never ride again but Esther found sitting on a horses back more comfortable than sitting in a chair. With drive, pure love of the sport and determination she rode again and went on to a successful Young Rider career.

Back in Canada she continues to pursue her dream of becoming a top dressage rider. She has had many triumphs along the way. A few years ago she competed in one of the World Cup qualifiers and finished second behind the very accomplished Canadian Olympic rider Eve Strauser. In 2002 Esther rode at the Championships of the Americas held in Quebec finishing 9th overall against competitors from North, South and Central America. 2003 brought her success with the wonderful Holsteiner stallion Cassandro at the Pan Am games.

Esther's goals are to compete at the PSG and I1 level this year and join the Guatemalan team for the 2007 Pan Am Games with her promising new mount, Key West (Charly Chaplin x Arogno).
